ICS Workshop - "Great Fall or New Normal: China’s Economic Restructuring and Its Impact on Southeast Asia"

China’s economic growth in 2015 has fallen to 6.9% from an unrivalled average of 10% between 2002 and 2014. This has spawned competing theories of what is happening to China. Is it essentially the result of a deliberate attempt by the government to restructure its economy, or that China is in for a hard landing as many Western commentators think? Whatever the explanation, a change of such a magnitude in China will undoubtedly impact Southeast Asia, which is intensively involved in trade and investment with China.

This workshop is looking to answer the above question. It also aims to provide insights on the meaning of the 'New Normal' and its political implications; the impact of the 'New Normal' on trade and investment in Southeast Asia as a whole, and on various individual countries in the region. There will be paper presenters from Tsing Hua University, Zhejiang University, Hong Kong University, University of California (Davis), National University of Singapore, University of Malaya, and from universities in Laos, Vietnam and Philippines. The workshop will be also greatly enriched by a luncheon address delivered by Tan Sri Rastam Mohd Isa on present Sino-Malaysian relations and the impact of the 'New Normal' on this relations.

Date: 28 July 2016
Time: 9.00 a.m. - 5.30 p.m.
