The visit by  Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim in April 2023 has heralded a forward looking chapter in Malaysia-China relations. During the visit, both PM Anwar and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed that China’s vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind is highly aligned with the Malaysia Madani concept proposed by the Malaysian government under the leadership of Anwar. Year 2023 was the tenth anniversary of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Malaysia and China, and of the Belt and Road Initiative, which Malaysia is fully supportive of.

It goes without saying that China stands out as one of the most important and consequential countries to Malaysia. For this purpose, the Institute of China Studies of the University of Malaya, with the support of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China, will organize an international academic conference to discuss issues of economic collaboration, cultural and civilizational interactions, and also the strategic and security aspects. Areas of potential collaboration will be identified, while key challenges and difficulties in the bilateral relations will also be discussed so that ways to manage these challenges could emerge.
